Stick Drift Test - Free Controller Drift Checker

Detect and measure analog stick drift on your gamepad instantly. Our free stick drift tester shows exactly how much your joysticks are drifting from center position. Works with Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and all PC controllers.

Connect Your Controller

Connect your gamepad via USB or Bluetooth and press any button to begin the stick drift test.

Supported: Xbox, PlayStation, Switch Pro, and more

What is Stick Drift?

Stick drift (also called joystick drift or analog drift) occurs when your controller's analog stick registers movement even when you're not touching it. This causes your character or camera to move on its own in games, making gameplay frustrating or impossible.

Stick drift is typically caused by:

  • Worn potentiometers - The sensors inside the stick wear down over time
  • Dust and debris - Particles get inside the mechanism
  • Physical damage - Dropping or rough handling
  • Manufacturing defects - Some controllers have drift from day one

How to Use the Stick Drift Tester

1

Connect Controller

Plug in your controller via USB or pair it via Bluetooth to your computer.

2

Press Any Button

Press any button on your controller to activate the drift test.

3

Release All Inputs

Let go of all buttons and sticks. Keep your hands completely off the controller.

4

Read Drift Score

Watch the drift percentage. 0% is perfect. Over 5% indicates significant drift problems.

Understanding Your Drift Score

0% - 1%
Excellent

Your controller has no detectable drift. Sticks are properly calibrated.

1% - 3%
Minor Drift

Slight drift detected. May not be noticeable in most games. Consider increasing deadzone.

3% - 5%
Moderate Drift

Noticeable drift. Will affect precision games. Try cleaning or adjusting deadzone settings.

5%+
Severe Drift

Significant drift problem. Controller may need repair or replacement.

How to Fix Stick Drift

Software Solutions

  • Increase Deadzone - Most games let you adjust the deadzone in settings to ignore small drift
  • Recalibrate Controller - Use your console's built-in calibration tool
  • Update Firmware - Check for controller firmware updates

Hardware Solutions

  • Clean the Stick - Use compressed air or isopropyl alcohol around the base
  • Replace Thumbstick Module - Buy replacement analog modules and solder them in
  • Contact Support - If under warranty, request a replacement from manufacturer

Controllers Known for Drift Issues

Nintendo Switch Joy-Con

Infamous for drift issues. Nintendo offers free repairs in many regions.

PlayStation DualSense

PS5 controllers can develop drift. Sony has faced class action lawsuits.

Xbox Elite Controller

Premium controller but prone to stick drift and bumper issues.

Standard Xbox Controller

Generally reliable but can develop drift after heavy use.

Stick Drift FAQ

Why does my controller drift?

Controller drift happens when the internal potentiometers wear down or accumulate dust. The sensors can no longer accurately detect the center position, causing phantom inputs.

Can stick drift be fixed permanently?

Yes, replacing the analog stick module can permanently fix drift. However, it requires soldering skills. Software solutions like increasing deadzone are temporary fixes.

Is stick drift covered by warranty?

Most manufacturers cover drift under warranty. Nintendo specifically offers free Joy-Con repairs. Check with your controller's manufacturer for their policy.

How accurate is this drift test?

Our stick drift tester uses the browser's Gamepad API to read raw analog values. It measures the actual deviation from center with high precision, giving you accurate drift percentages.

Why does my new controller have drift?

Some controllers have manufacturing defects. If your new controller shows drift, return it for a replacement. Our tester can help you verify the issue before returning.
